In this digital age, there is a sharp increase in penetration of mobile phones and electronic devices both globally and locally. But the long periods spent on these electronic gadgets has left many users with chronic neck pain and spinal problems.
Ghana is ranked second behind South Africa on
the basis of mobile phone penetration. According to geopoll about 80 percent of
Ghanaians or 8 out of every 10 people in Ghana have mobile phones. As of
January 2021, Ghana had approximately 16 million internet users of all ages
based on data from leading statistics database statistica. These are
significant strides considering their economic and social impacts. But the same
cannot be said for some Ghanaian mobile phone and internet users who have
developed some health complications from the devices.
However, an anonymous college instructor was
diagnosed of text neck some years ago after experiencing severe neck pain. He
was surprised when he got to know that the long hours on the phone and other
devices was the cause of his condition.

In addition, he said at the point of experiencing this neck pain it was quite unbearable and what made it difficult for him was the fact that it stiffened the neck and makes sitting difficult thus, the need for medical advice.
He
further stated that, the cost of treatment was not the only concern of this
instructor. He was more concerned that the chronic neck pain made it difficult
for him to work or engage in any other activity when it became unbearable.
The number of mobile phone users reporting at
chiropractic facilities with symptoms of text neck keeps rising as the country
makes strides in mobile phone and internet penetration.
Dr.
Craig Slapinski is a Neurosurgeon. He explains the dangers associated with
having text neck which occurs after spending long hours on electronic gadgets and
warns that text neck could be irreversible if medical attention is not sought
at an early stages.
The Global Burden of Disease study has identified neck pain as the 4th leading cause of disability globally. So the next time you pick your mobile phone or sit in front of your laptop, do not forget to minimize the time spend on the gadget to protect your neck and your health.
