Some university students in Ghana undergo some form of stress and mental health issues over the years when it comes to their education. Without the effectiveness of counseling in their schools, they find solace in the use of drugs to help them cope with academic related stress.
Speaking to a university of Ghana student who preferred to remain anonymous for this interview, he said, “my education is in shambles, I wasn’t going for class since I was going through it mentally”. He also said that his grades where not in good shape due to the fact that he was not able to concentrate on his education. He got introduced to drugs by some friends to help him cope.

Another student from KNUST who also wanted to remain anonymous also stated that, “the university education is different form what we thought it was going to be like, especially from shs to university I didn’t have enough counseling and guidance to choose the the right course”. and to help her manage “I smoke weed and sometimes codeine and also a study pill to help me focus”.

In 2016, a study conducted by KNUST found out that 35,000 adolescents use drugs before entering tertiary institutions and also keeps students away from class resulting in poor academic performance and mental health problems.

Psychologist Papa Wilson advises the Ghanaian government to pay close attention to the students mental health and equipping schools with certified counselors.
